Capital Park
Headquarters of Rovos Rail
Located in the Northern regions of Pretoria , Capital Park Locomotive Yard housed locomotives to the tune of 140 in their numbers - in and around 1943. The allocation of the site as a locomotive shed and marshalling yard took place in 1939. With technological advancement the yard inevitably experienced a decline in its operations with the arrival of diesel and electric locomotives.
Rovos Rail was successful in obtaining a long-term lease on the property in January, 1998. Since the lease inception Capital Park now hosts 15 lines, totalling a distance of 7km. A 100-metre platform is now under roof and there is a coal stage consisting of 40 loading chutes.
Rovos Rail has undertaken this enormous property with the intention of transforming it into a working locomotive museum as well as a world-beating site. Already, the loco sheds are in the process of rehabilitation and the loco department of the company took occupation of the sheds in November of 1996. Capital Park now houses the company’s administrative operations, rolling stock of 75 carriages and 6 locomotives, stores and workshops.
Lastly, this colonial-style railway station serves as the departure and arrival point of the most luxurious train on Earth – Rovos Rail… The Pride of Africa.
